While the idea of skiing can inspire images of dusty snow, gorgeous vistas, and hot chocolate, it's important to remember that skiing is not a walk in the park. It is, however, an exciting sport that can satisfy any need for adrenaline. If you've always wanted to try skiing, but haven't had the opportunity to do so yet, this guide will help you get started. Keep in mind that although this article talks about alpine ("downhill") skiing, it's not a substitute for the actual lessons - read on and then enter the classroom to start having a ridiculous amount of snow fun!
Learn how to distinguish the difficulty of the trail. You can tell how difficult a trail is by the symbol on the trail marker or the ski map. In North America, the difficulty of the trail is indicated as follows:
A green circle indicates an easy or beginner route. These trails are not too fast, will contain several obstacles, and will not take too long. These trails also don't have a very steep grade.
The blue square indicates the intermediate track. This may contain some obstacles or steeper markings, and you should not continue them until you master easier trails.
The black diamond indicates a difficult track. It may contain obstacles, magnates (small hills of snow) and a steep slope with a narrow path down. Don't try to behave like this if you are inexperienced. While you may think you're ready, you probably aren't. Many people were injured, sneaking in too early too soon.
A double black diamond, or a black diamond with an exclamation mark in it, indicates a run that should only be attempted by very good skiers. Do not leave this route if you are not fully comfortable with all other types of trails. It's also a good idea to go with a partner. Once you're ready for the double black, make sure it doesn't have an "EX" in the middle. This points to the "Expert Only" track, the only thing more difficult than heli-skiing. (Where you are dropped off by helicopters, these slopes are very avalanche-like).
Be aware that these difficulty estimates are only compared to other trails in the same resort. Therefore, a run marked with a blue square in one resort may be more difficult than a run marked with a black diamond in another resort. For this reason, when you ski at a new resort, you should always start with a green run and work on yourself, even if you are an experienced skier.
Know who has the right of way down the slope. The people ahead of you (meaning the slope down your slope) have the right of way. Your responsibility is to avoid them, even if they fall right in front of you. Because of this, it is better to keep a sufficient distance between you and the skier or snowboarder in front of you.
Always keep under control when you are on the slope. You need to know what difficulties you can handle. Don't go to the black diamond just because you think you're a natural skier, but you've never skied before. You risk seriously injuring (or even killing) someone or yourself if you collapse.
